UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s state visit to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic partnership between the two nations, a relationship that has evolved through decades of collaboration in political, economic, energy, and cultural realms. Established in 1972, the diplomatic ties between the UAE and Germany have flourished, with trade and investment emerging as pivotal areas of cooperation. Last year, bilateral trade surpassed Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s foremost trading partner in the Gulf region.
The economic relationship is further cemented by the presence of approximately 2,000 German companies operating in the UAE, including major industry players like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has seen significant collaboration, with both countries engaging in renewable energy initiatives, climate action, decarbonisation efforts, and ensuring energy security. A notable milestone in 2022 was the signing of an agreement aimed at bolstering energy security and industrial cooperation, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint ventures centered on clean energy and climate projects.
Beyond the realms of trade and energy, the partnership between the UAE and Germany extends to research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges, highlighting the multifaceted nature of their cooperation. Political ties were formally elevated in 2004 through a strategic partnership agreement, which encompasses key areas such as regional security, economic collaboration, and research initiatives.
Despite facing global political and economic challenges, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains robust. Both nations are committed to expanding their cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating resilience and a shared vision for future collaboration.
