Dubai’s Al Maktoum International Airport is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a 50-kilometre autonomous people mover network designed to shuttle passengers efficiently across the sprawling airport grounds. This driverless rail system will initially encompass nine stations, with construction slated for completion by December 2031. This development is timed to precede the scheduled opening of the airport’s first phase in 2032, marking a significant milestone in its expansion.
Once fully operational, the people mover network is anticipated to become the largest automated system of its kind globally, surpassing current installations at other major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. As the airport continues to expand, the network will eventually grow to include 14 stations, further enhancing connectivity within the airport complex.
Al Maktoum International Airport is being meticulously developed to ultimately accommodate up to 260 million passengers annually, alongside handling 12 million tonnes of cargo. The first phase of this immense project includes the construction of the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the introduction of the new people mover system. This phase alone will boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million, setting the stage for future growth.
In addition to the internal transit system, the airport will benefit from enhanced external connectivity. Plans are in place for an Airport Express Link that will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport. Furthermore, future integrations with Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro are expected to provide comprehensive transport solutions for travelers accessing the airport.
