Larijani’s Moment: The Man Managing Iran’s Most Dangerous Transition

by admin477351

In the absence of a Supreme Leader, one name has emerged repeatedly as the most visible coordinator of Iran’s response to the current crisis: Ali Larijani. A close adviser to Khamenei for years, a former parliamentary speaker, and currently Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Larijani has gained prominence since the June airstrikes and is now one of the most consequential figures in Iranian politics.

Larijani represents a particular strand of Iranian political identity: conservative in his commitment to the Islamic Republic’s fundamental principles, but pragmatic in his approach to strategy and diplomacy. He was involved in earlier rounds of nuclear negotiations and is generally regarded as someone who understands the international dimensions of Iran’s situation. In April 2025 he suggested that Iran could change its nuclear doctrine if forced to defend itself — a statement that attracted significant international attention.

His prominence in the current crisis does not necessarily translate into candidacy for the Supreme Leader position. The Supreme Leader must be a cleric of significant religious standing, and Larijani, while educated in religious sciences, is primarily known as a political figure. But his role as coordinator and public spokesman gives him influence over the process that may exceed that of more traditionally qualified clerical candidates.

The relationship between Larijani and the IRGC leadership will be closely watched. His ability to serve as an effective bridge between the civilian political establishment and the military-security apparatus will be crucial in the coming weeks. Iran’s ability to manage both the war and the succession simultaneously depends significantly on whether key institutional actors can coordinate their actions.

Larijani’s statements about both the conflict and the succession process carry a weight that reflects his current centrality. His public communications are being parsed closely by foreign governments and analysts for signals about Iran’s intentions and the direction of the transition.
