The recent state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the robust and evolving strategic partnership between the United Arab Emirates and Germany. This relationship, which has been developing since diplomatic ties were established in 1972, has seen significant growth across various sectors, including political, economic, energy, and cultural cooperation. The two nations have cultivated a strong connection, with trade and investment taking center stage. Last year, bilateral trade exceeded Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s top trading partner in the Gulf region.

Around 2,000 German companies, including industry giants like BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn, are currently operating in the UAE, highlighting the deep economic ties between the two countries. The energy sector is another area where collaboration has intensified, with joint efforts on renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security becoming increasingly prominent. In 2022, the UAE and Germany signed an agreement focused on bolstering energy security and industrial cooperation, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint initiatives on clean energy and climate issues.

Beyond trade and energy, the partnership between the UAE and Germany extends to research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. This multifaceted cooperation was formalized through a strategic partnership agreement in 2004, which covers regional security, economic collaboration, and research, further strengthening political ties. The enduring partnership reflects both countries’ commitment to addressing global challenges by working together across strategic sectors.

Despite facing global political and economic uncertainties, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient and continues to expand. Their commitment to cooperation across strategic areas is evident, as they seek to navigate challenges and seize opportunities presented by the evolving global landscape. This deepening partnership exemplifies a shared vision for mutual benefit and progress in an interconnected world.
