The Zayed Sustainability Prize from the United Arab Emirates has witnessed an unprecedented surge in interest, receiving 10,233 submissions from 177 countries for the 2027 awards cycle. This marks a significant 32% increase in entries from the previous year, demonstrating the growing commitment to addressing global challenges through innovative solutions in areas such as climate action, health, food, energy, water, and education at the high school level.
Each winner in the categories of climate, health, food, energy, and water will be awarded $1 million, while finalists in these categories stand to receive $150,000. In the global high school category, six winning schools will each receive $150,000, with the finalists being awarded $25,000. The prize aims to support and recognize projects that make a tangible difference in improving lives worldwide.
Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the Director General of the prize, noted that the increase in participation underscores a rising global demand for practical and innovative solutions to enhance quality of life. Notably, more than two-thirds of this year’s applications originated from developing and emerging economies, highlighting a significant interest in these regions. The climate action category attracted the most entries, reflecting widespread concern and engagement on this pressing issue.
The announcement of the finalists is scheduled for September, with the winners set to be celebrated at an awards ceremony on January 12, 2027. This prestigious event will honor those who have demonstrated exceptional creativity and efficacy in tackling some of the world’s most pressing challenges, encouraging continued innovation and collaboration across borders.
